Nutritionist urges increased consumption of local dishes for better health

Kanwi underscored the rich nutritional value of traditional meals, noting that they provide essential nutrients required for healthy living.

A nutrition officer at the Kassena Nankana Municipal Health Directorate, Kingsley Kanwi, has called on Ghanaians, particularly residents of the Upper East Region, to prioritise the consumption of local dishes as a pathway to improved health and overall well-being.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday, April 2, Kanwi underscored the rich nutritional value of traditional meals, noting that they provide essential nutrients required for healthy living.

“We encourage the consumption of these dishes because they are natural and adequately meet our nutritional needs, which in turn promotes good health.” He said.

He highlighted popular local meals such as tuo zaafi (TZ) served with ayoyo soup, explaining that they offer a balanced combination of nutrients.

According to him, TZ is a rich source of carbohydrates that provide energy, while ayoyo soup supplies vital nutrients including vitamins A and C, as well as iron.

Kanwi further pointed to the benefits of indigenous vegetables such as kenaf (locally known as “kenneth”, bito, and alefu, noting that they contain a variety of nutrients that support blood health and strengthen the immune system.

He emphasised that the regular consumption of such local foods can help reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases, including diabetes and hypertension.

Kanwi also cautioned against the growing perception that consuming fast foods and carbonated drinks is a sign of modernity, urging the public to instead take such products in moderation.

He added that maintaining a healthy diet does not have to be expensive, encouraging families to plan meals within their means while ensuring they remain nutritionally balanced.

“We can use our local foods to prepare well-balanced diets that provide energy, support body building, and boost the immune system. A good meal can include cereals, staples, local vegetables, and fruits.” He advised.
