President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a stirring message of support to Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, as they prepare to begin their World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto, Canada.
In an official statement issued on June 17, 2026, on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, President Mahama praised the team’s achievement in securing the country’s fifth FIFA World Cup appearance and urged the players to represent the nation with pride and determination.
Addressing the players, the President noted that they carry not only a football but also the hopes, dreams, and heritage of millions of Ghanaians.
“You carry more than a ball. You are carrying the hopes, dreams, and heritage of a people,” the statement said, adding that every Ghanaian heart beats in unison with the team as they take to the global stage.
President Mahama also called on Ghanaians living in Toronto and across North America to serve as the team’s “12th Man” by filling the stands with the national colours and offering unwavering support throughout the tournament.
The President further revealed that the government had secured official television broadcast rights to ensure that all Ghanaians can follow the Black Stars’ matches from across the country.
“Every tackle and every goal is beamed into homes from Axim to Bawku, and from Ho to Hamile,” the statement noted, describing the arrangement as a gift to a nation passionate about football.

Encouraging the players to draw inspiration from future generations, President Mahama urged them to play for the flag and for young Ghanaians who dream of following in their footsteps.
“The world is watching, and we are confident that the Black Star will shine brighter than ever before on this global stage,” he stated.
The message was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
Ghana begins its World Cup journey with high expectations as supporters across the country and in the diaspora rally behind the Black Stars in their quest for success on football’s biggest stage.
