Kassena-Nankana Municipality records 10 suicide attempts with two deaths in the first half of 2025
He described the figures as a wake-up call for communities to take suicide prevention seriously and emphasised that suicide can be prevented if communities work together to detect warning signs and support people in distress.
The Kassena-Nankana Municipality has recorded 10 suicide attempts with two deaths between January and June 2025, sparking renewed calls for community vigilance and mental health support.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday September 10, as part of activities marking World Suicide Prevention Day, the Municipal Mental Health Coordinator, James Abagna, revealed that while previous years showed no fatalities, the trend is shifting.
“Between January and June 2023, the municipality recorded 19 suicide attempts but all were successfully prevented. During the same period in 2024, 12 suicide attempts were recorded with no deaths. However, from January to June 2025, 10 suicide attempts have already been recorded, resulting in two deaths.” Abagna disclosed.
He described the figures as a wake-up call for communities to take suicide prevention seriously and emphasised that suicide can be prevented if communities work together to detect warning signs and support people in distress.
“Suicide can be reduced in our communities by observing each other and being each other’s keepers. Individuals experiencing disturbing thoughts should confide in someone they trust. While people are often willing to speak about physical health problems, they tend to keep mental struggles silent and this silence is dangerous.” He stated.
He urged families, friends and community leaders to create an environment where mental health challenges can be discussed openly, stressing that early detection, compassion and support are key to saving lives.
