New numbering system to improve vehicle tracking and data accuracy – Upper East DVLA Boss
He explained that the new numbering system comes with several benefits, particularly in strengthening security and data management.
The Upper East Regional Manager of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Emmanuel Abaidoo, says Ghana’s proposed new vehicle numbering system will significantly enhance vehicle tracking and provide accurate data on the number of vehicles on the country’s roads upon full implementation.
The initiative, recently announced by the DVLA, is awaiting the passage of the Legislative Instrument (LI) that will give it legal backing before nationwide implementation can begin.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday January 22, Abaidoo explained that the new numbering system comes with several benefits, particularly in strengthening security and data management.
“When this is done, there is no way someone will use a vehicle for criminal activities and not be traced. We will also be able to give accurate data on the number of vehicles on our roads.” He said.
He noted that once the system takes effect, owners of vehicles with the old number plates will be required to re-register their vehicles and replace the existing plates at DVLA offices, paying a prescribed fee for the new number plates.
Abaidoo further urged vehicle owners who registered their vehicles manually prior to 2023 to take advantage of the ongoing digital upgrade exercise.
“We are encouraging those who registered their vehicles manually to come, and we will onboard them onto the digital platform so that when we start this process, they are already captured in the digital system.”
